Active Design is an approach that seeks to develop and improve the built environment in a manner that encourages healthy life styles. Whether, implementing Complete Streets concepts that encourage pedestrian and bicycle activities, compact urban principals that make such movements more feasible, building design that encourages people to move their bodies, or park design that facilities physical activity, Active Design aims to improve health through encouraging movements individuals would employ in their daily lives. The object is to improve the overall health of a community by keeping its citizenry physically active. This evidence based approach has delivered positive results. The results were more livable communities that encourage healthier choices where physical activity increased, and aggregate health improved.

This initiative is as a result of a grant awarded by Miami-Dade County for the promotion of Active Design activities.
