Subject:Long Term Agreements with South Florida Council Boy Scouts of America, Girl Scout Council of Tropical Florida, Inc. and American Legion Post #144

Recommendation:
It is recommended that the Town Council authorize the Town Manager to enter into a long term, 3-year agreement with the following community nonprofit organizations: South Florida Council Boy Scouts of America, Girl Scout Council of Tropical Florida, Inc. and American Legion Post #144, for use of Town park facilities for meetings and events.
Background:
The Town of Miami Lakes has historically provided meeting and event space at park facilities to community, nonprofit organizations that offer programs and activities that benefit Miami Lakes residents. The current agreements with the South Florida Council Boy Scouts of America and the Girl Scout Council of Tropical Florida, Inc. expire on March 14, 2017.

It is the will of the Town Council that any long-term agreement (over 1 year) with any 501 c3 non-profit organization be approved by the Town Council and it is in the Town's best interest to continue the positive partnership it has with community organizations serving Miami Lakes residents. Information on these organizations are as follows:

South Florida Council, Boy Scouts of America
The South Florida Council, Boy Scouts of America helps deliver the Scouting Program to counties in South Florida and their mission is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law. The South Florida Council, Boy Scouts of America provides Club Scouts, Boy Scouts, Venturing, and Exploring, and Learning for Life programs to local youth and families. There are a number of Boy Scout troops that regularly meet in Miami Lakes, at Town facilities, and participate and volunteer in the many Town events and programs throughout the year. The Town of Miami Lakes has a history of working closely with this organization and partnering on Eagle Scout and other projects.

Girl Scout Council of Tropical Florida, Inc.
The Girl Scout Council of Tropical Florida, Inc. is the preeminent local organization dedicated solely to all girls ages 5 to 17 in the South Florida area. Where, in an accepting and nurturing environment, girls build courage, confidence, and character. In partnership with committed adult volunteers, girls develop qualities that will serve them all their lives, such as, leadership, strong values, social conscience, and conviction about their own potential and self-worth. There are a number of Girl Scout troops that regularly meet in Miami Lakes, at Town facilities, and participate and volunteer in Town events and programs throughout the year. The Town of Miami Lakes has a history of working closely with this organization on projects and other activities throughout the year.

American Legion Post #144
The American Legion is the nation's largest wartime veterans service organization, committed to mentoring youth and sponsorship of wholesome programs in communities, advocating patriotism and honor, promoting strong national security, and continued devotion to fellow service members and veterans. The American Legion Post #144 has partnered with the Town on the Veterans Day Parade and the Town's Flag Retirement Ceremony.
