On May 11, 2004 the Town Council approved Resolution No.04-228 for the agreement between the Florida Department of Transportation and the Town of Miami Lakes for the turf and landscape maintenance at the intersection of NW 154th Street and the Palmetto Expressway. The amount in the original agreement was 4.551 acres, since then, the areas have been increased as a request by the Town to the current 12.935 acres. The attached map identifies the areas to be maintained by FDOT landscape contractors in Orange, areas to be maintained by the Town in yellow (12.935 acres) and properties excluded are the sites of the County Fire Station and property transferred to the Town by FDOT for the Dog Recreation.
The Town provides a higher level of service than FDOT to include higher frequencies of mowing edging, trimming and litter pickup, fertilizing, and landscape maintenance in the high visibility areas along with having control of the removal of exotic plant materials. The Town presently provides a subsidy of $5,213 to maintain the area up to the Town's landscape standards.
The State of Florida through Statute # 287.058 (1) (d) has a mechanism in place to reimburse local municipalities, who elect to maintain state owned roads located within the respected municipality. A pre-determined maintenance cost per acre has been calculated by FDOT of $447.46 per acre totaling $5,788 per year for the 12.935 acres.

With the upcoming grant funded gateway beautification improvements in the FDOT maintained areas (9.84 acres), the Town is presently in discussions with FDOT to include these areas as part of this agreement along with an additional FDOT contribution of $4,403 annually to enhance the maintenance to Town standards. The Town's maintenance cost would increase by $3,966 annually. The resolution authorizes the Town Manger to approve any amendments to this DFA that would incorporate these areas for future maintenance subject to budget appropriation.
