Town of Miami Lakes
Memorandum

To:Honorable Vice Mayor and Councilmembers
From:Honorable Mayor Manny Cid
Subject:Roofing Resilience
Date:7/17/2018

Recommendation:

Our community is right in the middle of one of the world's most active Hurricane zones. Understanding that reality, the Town Council in 2015 adopted a strategic goal to: Achieve Universal Environmental Sustainability in Public and Private environments, operations and infrastructure. In line with our strategic plan, I would like to have a discussion with my colleagues on amending our Code to incorporate roofing resilience.

Recently, in a P&Z meeting recommendation, Town staff agreed that “standing metal seam” roof is a more sustainable material that will improve the home's energy efficiency, heat load, resistance to hurricane damage, and provide for extended durability of the roof. In the past, we've amending the code to allow other types of roofing materials that were also much more sustainable. (For the record, the Town has approved three variances in the last 10 years on these kinds of roofs)

Long term, helping foster an environment that our residents homes can be much more resistant to hurricane damage is a worthy objective.
